USC extends online classes through Aug. 1

Students will not return to the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus until at least Aug. 1.

The university said Thursday that it has extended online classes through the end of the Summer II semester. The school made the decision based on projections that indicate the new coronavirus is likely to remain a public health risk through early summer, according to a news release from USC.

Bob Caslen, university president, said the school consulted with experts at the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control as well as the university’s Arnold School of Public Health and Student Health Center.  

“I’m sure you share both my disappointment in this unavoidable decision and my confidence that it is necessary,” Caslen said in a written message to the university community. “Even as we know we’re doing what’s right to keep ourselves and others healthy and safe, the thought of continuing online instruction through the summer is difficult.  And yet, when I consider your determined attitude, uncompromised work ethic and continued commitment to academic excellence, I know that our summer sessions will adhere to the standards you expect and our accreditors demand.”

USC said all courses typically offered during the summer will be available remotely, with some exceptions, and that some online courses may be added.

The university said students may retrieve belongings from residence halls when state health officials determine it is safe to do so. The school is exploring options for students who are unable to return to Columbia, according to the release.

In addition, commencement ceremonies for the class of 2020 are still tentatively planned for Aug. 7 and 8 in Columbia, the university said.
