S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster convened a meeting of the S.C. Public Health Emergency Plan Committee today to discuss South Carolina’s preparedness for the potential effect of novel coronavirus on the state.

The committee includes representatives of state public health agencies, a licensed private physician specializing in infectious diseases, and a medical examiner, among other members.

While no cases of novel coronavirus, caused by the 2019-nCoV virus, have yet been identified in South Carolina, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has taken steps to protect public health, including: developed tools for the investigation of suspected and confirmed novel coronavirus cases; provided investigative and reporting training to epidemiology staff across the state; communicated information regarding the virus and its prevention to hospitals, businesses, schools and state agencies; and developed a webpage to provide information and resources.

The committee previously met on Jan. 31. Today’s meeting took place at 10 a.m. at the South Carolina Emergency Operations Center at 2779 Fish Hatchery Road in West Columbia.
