Unemployment falls to 5.1% in S.C. in March
The unemployment rate fell from 5.2% in February, with unemployment dropping in every S.C. county. Beginning this week, unemployment claimants will be required to complete two weekly work searches to remain eligible for benefits.
Initial unemployment claims top 5,000 in S.C.
The 5,045 claims filed for the week ending April 10 were the most in the state in five weeks. Richland County was one of two counties to see more than 400 claims with 409.
Traxler named DHEC’s director of public health
Dr. Brannon Traxler has served as interim director of public health for the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control since September 2020. The Greenville native is board-certified in general surgery.

An analysis from research company satelliteinternet.com found that S.C. was awarded $23.55 per resident in a federal program aimed at expanding broadband access in rural America. The FCC allocated $9.2 million in funding last year.
Midlands Gives returns May 4 with record number of participants
The annual online giving event raised a record-breaking $3.3 million in 2020. This year, 480 nonprofits in 11 Midlands Counties are participating in the event, which will begin at 6 a.m.
Program to fund improvements on Broad River Road
A Richland County program will provide up to $15,000 per project for exterior improvements including signage, painting and lighting projects from the 2200 block to the 3100 block. Applications will be accepted until May 25.
COMET fares to resume Monday
Fares will resume for Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority fixed-route bus and paratransit service routes. Downtown connector Soda Cap routes will have a $1 basic fare.

For the week ending April 3, South Carolina saw 4,969 claims filed, with a state-high 479 in Richland County. The total was an increase of more than 1,800 initial claims from the previous week.
