Unemployment falls to 4.6% in S.C. in May

The state's unemployment rate stood at 5% in April. Unemployment rates decreased in every county, with the leisure and hospitality industry reporting a gain of 4,000 jobs, according to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

Initial unemployment claims top 1,700 in week

For the week ending June 12, South Carolina saw 1,710 initial claims filed, with 182 filed in Greenville County, 159 in Spartanburg County and 123 in Richland County. Nationally, claims increased by 37,000 from the previous week.

For the week ending June 5, 1,887 claims were filed in South Carolina, bringing the total filed since March 15, 2020 to 900,665. Spartanburg County saw a state-high 130 claims filed.

For the week ending May 29, 1,972 initial unemployment claims were filed in the state, which will end federal benefits programs at the end of this month. Greenville County had a state-high 221 claims.

For the week ending May 22, $49.6 million in state and federal benefits were paid as 2,061 initial claims were filed. That represented a drop of 484 claims from the previous week, with Greenville County recording a state-high 222.

In March, the state had an unemployment rate of 5.1%. With federal unemployment benefits set to end June 26, DEW has begun referring claimants to some of the 82,000 jobs posted with the agency.
