Columbia Relief, a partnership between the city of Columbia and Richland and Lexington counties as well as dozens of regional organizations, has compiled a list of collection sites for donations related to Hurricane Florence relief.

The organization recommends donations of water, non-perishable food, cleaning supplies with bleach, clothing of all sizes (new or used but clean) and personal hygiene items. Volunteers are setting up donation boxes today, Columbia Relief said in a news release, and the collections will take place until the end of the week.

On Saturday, the organization will hold a “Pack a Bus” event at Soda City Market from 9 a.m. until noon and at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center from noon until 2 p.m. COMET has provided a bus for volunteers to fill with donations.

Secretary of State Mark Hammond reminded residents to be vigilant when making donations. A release from his office recommended that would-be givers research charities before making a donation (a list of charities can be found at www.sos.sc.gov) and not to be pressured into making an immediate donation. People should also verify the identification of telephone solicitors and not give out any personal or financial information over the phone.
