Residents in zip code 29203 and surrounding areas can continue to receive free testing for the coronavirus today at Eau Claire High School.

Around 300 people were tested at the school, located at 4800 Monticello Road, on Wednesday, according to a news release from the office of Rep. Todd Rutherford, D-Columbia. Individuals did not have to be symptomatic or have a medical order to be tested.

“The 29203 zip code is a coronavirus ‘hotspot,’ and I wanted to do something about it,” Rutherford said in the release. “We forged this public/private partnership and brought free coronavirus testing into our community.”

According to data from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, the 29203 zip code had 80 reported cases of COVID-19 and 491 estimated cases as of April 28. Zip code 29223 had a state-highest 168 and 1,032, respectively.

Testing will continue today from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The testing is a collaboration between S.C. House leadership, including Speaker Jay Lucas, R-Hartsville, Ways and Means Committee chair Murrell Smith, R-Sumter, and Majority Leader Gary Simrill, R-Rock Hill, according to the release. Other partners in the effort included the Medical University of South Carolina, Doctors Care, Richland County School District One and the Columbia Police Department.
