The S.C. Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum will share the spooky stories behind some of its eeriest artifacts and legends at a special program on Halloween.

Joe Long, the museum’s curator of education, will share the creepy tidbits during the noon Lunch & Learn session.

Among the curious tales:

  • The uniform of former Confederate soldier Weller Rothrock wouldn’t go quietly onto its display pedestal. Each time the mannequin wearing Rothrock’s uniform was left alone, museum staff would return to find it stooped over with its right arm reaching for something — perhaps an item in a drawer containing some of his possessions which kept opening by itself?
  • Matthew Calbraith Butler lost a foot to a Civil War cannonball that killed a man and two horses. For the rest of his days, Butler kept a grisly reminder of his injury.
  • Gen. Wade Hampton’s ghost is said to have been spotted riding on horseback through the treetops on Bull Street for several nights in 1914.

Some of the spine-tingling stories will also be available on the relic room’s Facebook page throughout October.
