McCoy confirmed as U.S. attorney for District of South Carolina

Peter M. McCoy Jr. has been unanimously confirmed as the U.S. attorney for the District of South Carolina by the U.S. Senate.

The U.S. attorney is the chief federal law enforcement officer handling federal criminal prosecutions and civil cases involving the United States in South Carolina. McCoy will supervise approximately 62 assistant U.S. attorneys and 75 support staff, according to a news release. McCoy’s office also collects debts owed to the United States.

Before being initially appointed as U.S. attorney on March 30, McCoy, a Charleston resident and graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and Regent University Law School, was a partner at McCoy and Stokes law firm in Charleston. He also spent more than five years as a criminal prosecutor in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

“I could not be more proud to be confirmed as U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina,” McCoy said in the release. “Since the Attorney General appointed me in late March, I have watched the remarkable people of this office work through unprecedented times to continue the important work of this office: keeping the people of South Carolina safe. Having the opportunity to lead this office is among the greatest honors of my professional career.”
