More than $14.5 million in grants have been awarded to 34 S.C. projects focusing on water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure by the S.C. Rural Infrastructure Authority.

A majority of the grants will help improve aging sewer collection and treatment facilities and drainage structures, along with upgrading water supply, storage and distribution systems, according to a news release from RIA.

Grants are awarded twice a year through a competitive process that considers public health, environmental, sustainability and economic development factors. Recipients share in the cost by paying for non-construction activities and at times providing additional construction funds. The organization has awarded $25.7 million to projects this fiscal year.

“The need to partner, collaborate and work together is critical to the long-term sustainability of a community,” Bonnie Ammons, RIA executive director, said in the release. “By targeting limited public resources where they will have the greatest long-term impact and addressing the most pressing needs to protect public health and the environment, these grants improve and strengthen the communities they serve.”
