Five degree programs at Midlands Technical College have been ranked in the top 25 African-American students earning associate degrees by a national higher education publication.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education issues an annual ranking of the top 100 Degree Producers, recognizing institutions that confer the most degrees to minority students. MTC earned a spot on the list for the 10th consecutive year among the nation’s approximately 1,200 technical and community colleges, according to a news release from the college.

Five career areas were recognized for awarding degrees to African-American students: family and consumer sciences/human sciences (No. 4); legal professions and studies (No. 16); public administration and social service professions (No. 22); registered nursing, nursing administration, nursing research, and clinical nursing (No. 23); and dental support services and allied professions (No. 24).

In addition, MTC ranked 19th for associate degrees awarded to Asian-American students in construction trades. A total of 14 MTC career areas made the rankings.

“Midlands Technical College provides pathways to higher education and career training for a broad array of students and actively addresses the under-representation of African-Americans in higher education,” Ronald L. Rhames, president of MTC, said in the release. “This report demonstrates our commitment to diversity and shows that our rigorous curriculum is accessible to all.”
