Students at Midlands Technical College will be eligible for a new scholarship program beginning this fall.

The South Carolina Workforce and Industrial Needs Scholarship is offered through the state technical college system to help fill workforce shortages in the state.

Recipients of the SC WINS scholarships will receive up to $600 per semester to be applied toward tuition, according to a news release. If a student is enrolled in at least one course in what is considered a critical workforce area, he or she may qualify for a book allowance of up to $300 per year.

The South Carolina Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education defines programs that are considered critical workforce area.

SC WINS scholarships are available for high school students enrolled in a dual enrollment program.

Students who receive lottery tuition assistance and meet U.S. Department of Agriculture income eligibility guidelines for free and reduced-priced meals also may qualify for the SC WINS scholarships, regardless of their program.

“This new funding will help students as well as employers needing a talented workforce. It fits perfectly with MTC’s mission,” said MTC president Ron Rhames.

MTC offers 85 certificate and degree programs in health care, advanced manufacturing, engineering technology, industrial technology and information technology.
