The S.C. Chamber of Commerce has named Gov. Nikki Haley its 2015 Public Servant of the Year.

The organization honored her and three other award recipients Thursday at its annual summit on Hilton Head Island. The governor was selected thanks in part to her leadership following the tragedy at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church earlier this year.

“We are blessed to live in a place where our governor has put her heart and soul into making our state and the business community better,” S.C. Chamber President Ted Pitts said. “We especially applaud Gov. Haley for her leadership after the Charleston tragedy in bringing our state together at a time when we could’ve easily been divided.

“The governor’s guidance during trying times has had a significant and positive impact on the state of South Carolina. We are lucky to have Gov. Haley as our governor and the South Carolina Chamber is proud to be able to recognize her as the public servant of the year at our 36th Annual Summit.”

In addition, Lexington’s Lt. Murray Price, a WWII bomber pilot, was honored with the organization’s Sgt. William Jasper Freedom Award.

“I’m accepting this, but I’m really doing it for all my compatriots,” he said in a video honoring his service, which included a total of 40 combat missions. “The other guys that are passed on are probably more deserving than I am.”

In addition, Santee Cooper president and CEO Lonnie Carter, as well as SCANA chairman and CEO Kevin Marsh were honored as the 2015 Business Leaders of the Year.
