Columbia Modern is the theme of the Palladium Fall Tour, set for Sunday.

Historic Columbia’s Palladium group is hosting a tour of Columbia homes that are examples of midcentury modern architecture and design. Tour guests can peek inside participating homes from noon to 4 p.m.

“A lot of these houses are still in pristine condition,” said Janie Campbell, Palladium Fall Tour co-chair. “It’s like stepping back in time when you go in there.”

Midcentury modern is architecture, furniture and graphic design from the central years of the 20th century, usually between 1930 and 1980. It was a common style for middle-class Americans because of technology advancements and lower-cost building materials after World War II.

“Columbia really grew in the post-World War II period, and we have a great collection of midcentury homes,” Campbell said.

Stops on the tour include the Seibels Insurance building on Bull Street and several private homes, including properties eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Campbell said.

The tour wraps up at an after party at Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse at the historic Curtiss-Wright Hangar at Owens Field. Each guest with a wristband receives a complimentary beverage.

This is the second year of the Palladium Fall Tour. Last year the group featured buildings on Main Street in Columbia.

Tickets are $25 for Palladium members, $30 for Historic Columbia members, and $40 for the public. Guests can pick up wristbands Sunday at the Robert Mills House gift shop at 16161 Blanding St. between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Advance ticket sales end Friday. Remaining tickets will be available at gift shop. Money raised from the event supports Historic Columbia and its programs.

Palladium supports Historic Columbia through educational, social and fundraising programs.
