Longtime banking leader dies at 89

Frank Brown Holding, retired executive vice chairman of First Citizens BancShares Inc. and its First Citizens Bank subsidiary, died May 26 at age 89.

Holding was instrumental in the success of Raleigh, N.C.-headquartered First Citizens as well as both the former First Citizens Bank and Trust Co. of Columbia, which merged with First Citizens Bank in 2015, and Southern Bank, based in Mount Olive, N.C.

Holding joined First Citizens Bank in 1956 and retired in September 2014. He and his late brothers, Robert Holding Dr. and Lewis Holding, helped solidify First Citizens’ presence in North Carolina and build the bank into a national franchise. With more than 500 branches in 19 states, including Columbia locations on Main Street and in Forest Acres, West Columbia and Cayce, the bank currently has assets of $34 billion.
