People who may have had personal and financial information compromised in a 2017 Equifax data have until next week to file a claim.

The deadline to file is Jan. 22.

People whose financial data was compromised in the breach are eligible for free credit monitoring services as well as payment for time spent attempting to remedy identity theft and identity restoration services, as outlined in a class-action settlement.

To determine if you were affected by the security breach, check the Equifax lookup tool. Then visit the settlement website to file a claim.

Consumers are advised to check their credit reports by going to annualcreditreport.com for a free copy. The S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs suggests consumers continue to monitor all financial, medical and government benefit statements for suspicious activity.

In 2017, Equifax announced its systems had been targeted in a criminal cyberattack in which the personal information of about 147 million U.S. consumers was accessed. The compromised information included names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, and addresses along with some driver’s license numbers, credit card numbers, and other personal information.

In July, S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson announced state residents affected by the breach may be eligible for a share of nearly $2.2 million allotted to the state in the settlement. Wilson said more than 2.3 million state residents had their personal and financial information compromised in the breach.
