Richland County approves more than $1 million in grants

Richland County is making more than $1 million in financial support available for small businesses and nonprofits affected by economic downturns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, Richland County Council approved a grant relief program that allocates $500,000 for small businesses and $500,000 for nonprofits addressing food insecurity for senior citizens and low- to moderate-income households. An additional $250,000 will help nonprofits address other community needs such as rent and utilities, according to a new release from Richland County.

The county has already awarded $250,000 of the allocated funds to help provide food for vulnerable senior citizens, according to the release.

The grant program focuses on three categories of small business: retail; food service; and arts, entertainment and recreation. Any small business, however, in unincorporated Richland County can apply for funds to help cover payroll expenses, rent and mortgage payments, insurance costs, utility expenses or similar costs.

The application process opens today, and the deadline to apply is June 30. Applications must be submitted via ZoomGrants through the county’s website, www.richlandcountysc.gov.
