Bobbitt Design Build recently completed construction on Columbia Smiles’ second dental practice, which is located in the Keenan Building in downtown Columbia.

The sixth-floor office’s interior is designed to match the restorations that the historic building at 1310 Lady St. will be undergoing.

The waiting room features trey ceilings and bulkheads trimmed with wood to accent the original wood installed in the 1930s. Portions of the existing hardwood floors and existing mosaic tile have been refinished to match the structure’s charm and character.

Due to the building’s historic nature, Bobbitt dealt with a few challenges along the way by having to work around the layout of existing floors, such as hardwoods and mosaic tiles, and dealing with low ceiling heights.

In July 2103, the building was sold to a partnership that announced plans to convert the 121,682 square-foot structure at Sumter and Lady streets into a mixed-used facility that includes apartments, retail space and offices. In addition, the new owners planned to restore the exterior.

The building’s anchor tenant is Merrill Lynch.

Dr. Nick Pournaras is the owner of the Columbia Smiles practice.
