Shandon Baptist Church has been green-lighted by Columbia’s Design/Development Review Commission to build a new 5,000-square-foot college ministries center on Devine Street.

The project, which would be situated next to Bank of America near the heart of Five Points and across the street from Jake’s Bar and Grill, received commission approval Thursday night. The one-story, brick structure with glass façade would replace an existing retail building and residential building at 2127 and 2133 Devine Street, both of which are currently vacant.

The only recommendations from the commission were to provide a site lighting plan and to modify the east building elevation to incorporate brick and windows.

Owner Brandon Petersen, Shandon Baptist’s executive pastor and minister of education, could not be reached for comment.

According to the Richland County Tax Assessor website, the church purchased both parcels in July for a total of $1.14 million.
