A documentary produced by South Carolina Educational Television about an African American nightclub in Myrtle Beach has won an Emmy award.

Charlie’s Place received an Emmy for best historical/cultural program, according to a news release. As part of the network’s Carolina Stories series, Charlie’s Place tells the story of the nightclub during segregation, a time which included an attack from the KKK in 1950.

Before closing in 1965, Charlie’s Place welcomed patrons of all races and was an example of racial diversity and black entrepreneurship, according to the release.

“I’m extremely proud that Charlie’s Place continues to be recognized. The club was a light for many during dark times, and it was an honor to help tell its story,” producer Betsy Newman said.

In May, Charlie’s Place received a bronze Telly award in the history category.

The 45th Annual Southeast Emmy Awards were presented in Atlanta last weekend. Although it did not win, SCETV’s S.C. Impacting Global Health was nominated for an Emmy in the best health/science program feature/segment category.
