As South Carolina Educational Television prepares to air the new Ken Burns PBS documentary Country Music, it’s hosting a country music songwriting contest for students in fifth through 12th grade.

The contest includes both individual and group categories. Finalists will be notified by Sept. 10 and the public will vote online for their favorite entrant. Winners will be announced Sept. 15 at a special screening of Country Music at the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities.

“We are excited about this opportunity for students, because it covers multiple curriculum areas,” Stephanie Frazier, SCETV vice president of education, said in a news release. “Through the development of song lyrics and music composition, students will demonstrate 21st century skills, including communication, creativity, innovation and media literacy.”

The eight-part, 16-hour Country Music documentary series premieres Sept. 15 at 8 p.m.

Entries must be submitted by Sept. 6.  Click here for rules and other details.
