Darlington-based Covered in Cotton, which makes throw blankets, has been named the overall winner of Garden & Gun magazine’s annual Made in the South awards.

In addition to a feature in the magazine, Covered in Cotton will also receive a $10,000 cash award.

Two other S.C. companies were winners in their respective categories.

Winners of six categories — food, drink, home, style, crafts and outdoors — are featured in the Garden & Gun issue on newsstands Nov. 19. This is the 10th year the magazine has honored Southern companies for their creations.

Covered in Cotton was featured in the craft category. Founders Ty and Tracy Woodard produce the blankets from cotton grown on their 4,000-acre farm in Darlington, where Ty’s family has raised cattle since 1962. The Woodards joined forces with businesses located within 150 miles of the farm to produce the blankets, which also have a philanthropic purpose. For every 10 Covered in Cotton blankets sold, one is donated to a children’s hospital in South Carolina.

Winning in the food category was Cross-based Taste of Satira’s Gullah Geechee crab boil sack. Company founder Pamela D. Jones Mack turned flavors she grew up with into a catering business that also sells sachets of spice blends.

A Blue Ridge camp knife made by Stono Knife Works, based in Taylors, won the outdoors category. The knife’s handle has a topographic map of the Blue Ridge Mountains sealed in resin.
