SC Biz News wins 11 SCPA awards

SC Biz News publications won 11 S.C. Press Association awards for work in 2020, including eight first-place honors.

(Photo/File)The Columbia Regional Business Report took first place in the newspaper publication category, while SCBIZ magazine won first among magazines or special publications. SC Biz News special publications editor Steve McDaniel and designer Jackie Royds won for their work on the magazine’s fall issue.

GSA Business editor Ross Norton won two first-place awards. Norton won business reporting with a profile of a grass-roots effort that grew into a regional campaign to rescue the restaurant industry and first place in column or editorial writing with a column championing the much-maligned participation trophy.

SC Biz News creative director Ryan Wilcox also took a pair of first-place honors. Wilcox won feature page design for his work on Lake Wylie Today magazine and for an infographic depicting a timeline of COVID-19 cases in South Carolina.

CRBJ digital editor Alexandria Ng won first place for her news photo of Mike Pence speaking at an event at The Citadel.

Columbia Regional Business Report editor Melinda Waldrop won first place in news reporting for an article chronicling how local businesses dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charleston Regional Business Journal reporter Teri Errico Griffis won second place in news reporting with an examination of how the pandemic affected S.C. nonprofits. Griffis also took second place in business reporting for a story detailing the Charleston farmers market’s struggle and survival during the pandemic.

Charleston Regional Business Journal managing editor Andy Owens won third place in the reporting-in-depth category with a look at how state businesses used billions in federal pandemic relief dollars to save 658,000 jobs.

The awards were announced March 1, and winners will be honored at an awards ceremony in October.
