South Carolina is one of 20 states that will receive federal assistance funding under the Temporary Emergency Impact Aid for Displaced Students program.

The state will get $304,000 to assist with costs of educating students displaced by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria or the 2017 California wildfires.

“The impact of natural disasters goes beyond the affected area,” U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a news release. “The additional funding will ensure schools serving displaced students are able to meet their needs.”

South Carolina districts Colleton, Beaufort, Anderson 5, York 3 and Clarendon 1 reported displaced students to the S.C. Department of Education under the Temporary Emergency Impact Aid guidelines. Distribution amounts will be announced later.

The awards were made based on the quarterly counts of displaced students that are included in the state educational agencies applications for Emergency Impact Aid. The total amount given to the program was $359.8 million.
