Activist Sybrina Fulton will deliver the commencement address at Benedict College’s winter graduation ceremony, set for Dec. 15.
Fulton is the mother of Trayvon Martin, whose 2012 shooting death sparked a nationwide social justice movement. She founded the Trayvon Martin Foundation in 2012 and established the Circle of Mothers, a retreat for women who have lost children to gun violence, in 2014.
“Sybrina is a model of grace and strength,” Roslyn Clark Artis, president and CEO of Benedict College, said in a news release. “Because of her passion and dedication, ‘we are all Trayvon’ and demand social justice for our sons.”
Fulton also co-authored “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,” a six-part TV documentary, along with Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin. Fulton, a Miami native, has a son, Jahvaris, and is a graduate of Florida Memorial University and a member of the alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Benedict’s winter commencement will be held at 9 a.m. in the Benjamin E. Mays Human Resources Center Arena.
