University of South Carolina students, including an estimated 6,250 freshmen, began moving into residence halls today.

The university said 30 countries are represented in this year’s freshman class, which will bring the student population at the Columbia campus to around 35,500. Female students make up 55% of the freshman class, the school said, which also includes 594 South Carolina Honors College students, 79 high-school valedictorians and 140 student-athletes.

Six hundred new international students will bring USC’s international population to 1,891 students representing 96 countries, the university said.

After moving in today and Tuesday, students can participate in activities including an exploration of the Russell House University Union on Tuesday night and convocation at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Classes begin on Thursday, when students can also take part in Discover Columbia, an event that will give them a chance to see the city and interact with local businesses.

Friday will feature the university’s annual Opportunity Knocks part-time job fair from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Russell House.

Newly elected USC president Robert Caslen will speak at Wednesday’s convocation.
