Annual USC economic conference changes dates, format

The annual economic conference sponsored by the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business has changed format and dates.

The 40th annual Economic Outlook Series will take place Sept. 29 and Nov. 30 in two interactive livestreaming events before and after the election. Experts will address government policy changes likely to result from the election as well as the effects of the pandemic-related lockdown and economic contraction this spring and summer, according to a news release.  

The series will include a forecast for jobs, housing and business conditions, and both events will allow for questions and comments.  

A one-day event was previously called the Economic Outlook Conference and held in December.

The Sept. 29 event, set for noon until 1 p.m., will include remarks from Robert Oldendick, professor of political science and the director of graduate studies for USC’s College of Arts and Sciences, who will discuss the national and local election outlook. Doug Woodward, Moore School Division of Research director and professor of economics, will examine why the stock market is booming while the rest of the economy struggles. Joey Von Nessen, Moore School research economist, will present the 2020 South Carolina economic outlook.

On Nov. 30, Thomas Barkin, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, whose region includes South Carolina, will provide economic perspectives. Other speakers will be announced for that session, which will also be held from noon to 1 p.m., according to the release.

Registration is $20 for one event or $30 for both and available online at sc.edu/moore/eoc. There is no charge for USC students, staff and faculty.
