Midlands Technical College will hold an in-person graduation ceremony at 10 a.m. on May 1 at Segra Park.

Williams (Photo/Provided)MTC graduate Bianca Williams, founder of AFFC Law Firm, will be the commencement speaker. Williams, who earned an associate in arts as well as a paralegal associate degree at MTC, is also the founder of nonprofit Premature Millionaires, which provides financial, emotional and mentoring resources for foster children.

Williams, who went on to earn a degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School and a law degree from North Carolina Central University, entered the foster care system at age 10, according to MTC’s website.

“Growing up in foster care, there are so many statistics you’re told, especially as a student, and one of the biggest ones is the low probability of you finishing high school and graduating from college,” Williams said in an article on the website. “It ignited my drive to be successful, along with my personal experiences.”

In 2020, Williams was named the Law-Related Education Lawyer of the Year by the South Carolina Bar Association for her work as a coach for Blythewood High School’s mock trial program.

Face coverings and social distancing will be required at the May 1 ceremony, which will also be livestreamed. A rain date is scheduled for May 22.

“I am very pleased that we are returning to an in-person graduation ceremony,” Ronald L. Rhames, MTC president, said in a news release. “Face coverings will be required, and social distancing protocols will be in place, but this will be a traditional commencement celebration with all the pomp and circumstance our graduates deserve.”
