Dominion Energy presented South Carolina State University with a $1 million check at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament this past weekend in Norfolk, Va.

The grant is part of the company’s $25 million commitment made in 2020 through its HBCU Promise Education Equity Initiative. The six-year initiative supports endowments, capital projects, operating expenses and educational programs in clean energy at 11 historically Black colleges and universities in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Ohio.

S.C. State is one of four South Carolina institutions to receive grants.

“Every student deserves access to equitable education, and we’re proud to do our part by partnering with HBCUs in the Palmetto State on various initiatives, including the HBCU Promise,” Keller Kissam, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina, said in a news release. “This commitment helps us to cultivate a diverse workforce so that our future leaders will look more like the communities we serve throughout our great state.”

The $1 million grant will help S.C. State expand its computer, electrical and mechanical engineering programs, upgrade laboratories and hire additional faculty.
