S.C. Electric & Gas, principal subsidiary of Cayce-based SCANA Corp., has filed for a $22.6 million, or 5.29%, overall decrease to its retail natural gas base rates with the S.C. Public Service Commission.

Lower corporate taxes and operating results drove the decrease, SCANA said in a news release. The company filed for the decrease under the terms of the Natural Gas Rate Stabilization Act, a state law designed to improve and maintain natural gas service infrastructure.

If approve, the rate decrease will be effective in the first billing cycle of November, SCANA said. The company said residential natural gas customers would see their bills decrease by approximately 7.4%, or $4.09, per month based on annual average usage.

In May, SCE&G completed a $180 million purchase of a natural gas plant in Gaston. SCE&G said the purchase of Columbia Energy Center, a 540-megawatt combined-cycle gas plant, from LS Power replaced more than 40% of the projected generating capacity from the utility’s portion of the abandoned V.C. Summer nuclear reactor project.
