A subsidiary of Dominion Energy has been awarded a $142 million, 50-year contract to purchase and operate the electric utility system at Fort Jackson.

Dominion Privatization of South Carolina LLC will assume the ownership, operation and maintenance of Fort Jackson’s electric system in April 2019. The U.S. Army chose the unregulated subsidiary in a competitive bid process.

“We have a long tradition of working with the military,” Robert M. Blue, Dominion Energy executive vice president said in a news release. “Our company is consistently ranked among the top companies in the nation in helping veterans and their families find and keep jobs in the civilian workforce.  This new contract to provide electric service gives us another layer of support we can directly provide to the men and women in the armed services.”

Dominion Energy, based in Richmond, Va., has proposed acquiring Cayce-based utility SCANA Corp. in a $14.6 billion deal. Dominion has invested more than $750 million in gas transmission and renewable growth projects in South Carolina since 2015, the company said.

SCANA subsidiary S.C. Electric & Gas has been awarded a $34 million, 50-year contract to own, operate and maintain Fort Jackson’s natural gas distribution system. The U.S. Department of Defense said four responses were received in the competitive bid process.
