Construction has begun on a 6-megawatt solar facility in Bamberg County that will generate enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of 1,000 homes. The Dominion Energy-owned facility is expected to begin operating in the fourth quarter.

The Denmark facility is one of three solar arrays purchased from Charleston-based Southern Current that have long-term power purchase agreements with Dominion Energy South Carolina, according to a news release. The arrays, which include Blackville Solar in Barnwell County and Yemassee Solar in Hampton County, have a generating capacity of 23.2 MW. All three are expected to enter service this year, according to the release.

Dominion Energy also plans to purchase the 12-MW Trask East Solar facility in Beaufort County from Southern Current in September. That facility also has a power purchase agreement with Dominion Energy South Carolina, which has more than 971 MW of solar capacity on its system.

“We have fully embraced adding solar generation on our system and making it accessible for all customers as we work to help build a clean, sustainable energy future of South Carolina,” Danny Kassis, vice president of customer relations and renewables for Dominion Energy South Carolina, said in the release. “Dominion Energy South Carolina has worked very hard at integrating these new assets and the existing 971 megawatts of solar into our system. We look forward to continuing our work to collaboratively and cost-effectively create a lower-carbon future for our customers and our state.”
