Haley’s former chief of staff rejoins Nelson Mullins

James Burns, Gov. Nikki Haley’s former chief of staff, has returned to Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough as a partner.

Burns, who joined the Haley administration in 2014, will focus on consumer financial services litigation, business litigation, and government relations at Nelson Mullins.

A commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve Judge Advocate General's Corps, Burns served as deputy legal counsel for the Vice Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon from 2006-2008. He also was assistant force judge advocate for the Commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command from 2005-2006. Before that he was a prosecutor in the Trial Service Office Southeast from 2002-2005.

Burns earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law and his bachelor’s in political science from The Citadel.
