Columbia Parks and Recreation, local law enforcement and Benedict College plan to host a community forum on policing and building relationships with law enforcement March 27.

The forum is part of the city’s recognition of National Youth Violence Prevention Week, April 8-12, according to a news release from the Parks and Recreation department.

The forum “will focus on policing in our city and address ways law enforcement and the community can build stronger relationships,” the release said.

National Youth Violence Prevention Week was established “to raise awareness and educate students, teachers, school administrators and staff, school resource officers, parents and the public about effective ways to prevent and reduce youth violence,” according to the release.

Mayor Pro Tem Tameika Isaac Devine, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the S.C. Highway Patrol are expected to attend.

The event, free and open to the public, will be held at Benedict College’s Swinton Campus Center at 1616 Oak St. in Columbia.
