The S.C. Department of Revenue is preparing to issue $61 million in rebate checks to state taxpayers.

Qualifying state taxpayers will receive a check for $50 from the department of revenue later this year. To qualify, taxpayers must have filed a 2018 South Carolina individual income tax return before Oct. 15, 2019 and must have had a state tax liability after credits of at least $50.

The rebates come from the state’s payout for the Mega Millions jackpot winner from the drawing on Oct. 24, 2018.  The state Legislature voted to offer a rebate to taxpayers from state income tax revenues generated from the winning ticket.

The Mega Millions ticket worth $1.5 billion was sold at a Simpsonville convenience store.

The department said rebates will be issued as paper checks by Dec. 2, and checks will be mailed to the most recent address on file for eligible taxpayers. If you have moved since filing your 2018 taxes, notify the SCDOR of your new address immediately.

One check will be sent per tax return, so married couples filing a joint return will receive one $50 check.
