More than $7 million in Community Development Block Grant funding has been award to 21 S.C. communities for public improvement projects.

The S.C. Department of Commerce awards the funds in the fall and spring of each year to projects selected through a competitive process. Recipients are required to provide a least a 10% match for projects that meet at least one of three objectives: benefiting low- to moderate-income persons; preventing or eliminating slums and blighted conditions; and/or meeting other urgent community needs where existing conditions pose a serious threat to public welfare.

Grant funds are allocated on an annual basis from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“The CDBG program continues to be an invaluable asset to economic development efforts in communities across South Carolina,” S.C. Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt said in a news release. "With this resource, and the public projects it affords, our state's residents enjoy an improved quality of life, which is the hallmark of South Carolina as an ideal destination for business."
