Gov. Henry McMaster has taken his next step in preventing opioid abuse with the release of the S.C. Opioid Emergency Response Plan.

The plan was a collaboration of more than two dozen organizations that constitute the S.C. Opioid Emergency Response Team. The team was created by McMaster by executive order in December. It is led by SLED chief Mark Keel and Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services interim director Sara Goldsby.

“We will add to and amend this plan as we encounter new issues and achieve successes,” McMaster said in a news release. “We will combat the opioid crisis as one team collaborating and sharing talents and resources to help the people of South Carolina.”

In a second executive order, McMaster limited initial opioid prescriptions to five days.

The plan has four focus areas: education and communication; prevention and response; treatment and recovery; and coordinated law enforcement strategies.

The plan also provides specifics for how organizations should address the four focus areas. It can be modified and adapted to address the needs of local communities.
