Greenville Health System and Palmetto Health announced Tuesday they will partner under the new brand of Prisma Health beginning in 2019.

The two systems merged in November 2017 under the name S.C. Health Co. Both will be rebranded as Prisma, but campuses and hospitals such as Baptist, Greenville Memorial, Richland and Tuomey, will retain those names.

Charles Beaman Jr., Prisma Health co-chief executive officer, said in a conference call Monday he wanted the nearly 30,000 workers in the organization to be united under one name.

We decided to make up our own name, Prisma.”

Beaman said he wants the word to remind patients of a prism.

“Prisms have been around a long time, much like both of our corporations,” Beaman said. “But what many people distinguish about prisms is the light that comes through them. It’s progressive, beautiful, stimulating and innovative. That’s what we want to be: multi-dimensional and creative while still honoring our roots.”

John Singerling, president of Palmetto Health, said in a news release that a shared name will make it easier for patients to understand the new company’s identity and the services it provides.

GHS and Palmetto Health brands, including names and logos, will be changed early next year. The Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group will also be renamed Prisma Health-USC Medical Group in 2019.

The changes include a new purpose statement.

“Our new common goal is to inspire health, serve with compassion and be the difference,” Singerling said.

During the conference call, Beaman said there would be no immediate staffing changes stemming from the name change, but said there could be new opportunities, including additions to staffs and networks outside the state.
