“Dr. Leonardi is the truest example of professionalism and compassion I have ever seen,” Jim Hudson said during a June 22 presentation at LMC. “In a time of crisis, to have a doctor take such special care of you is truly an amazing and calming experience.”

The donation will fund four years of blood pressure cuffs for patients with high blood pressure who have suffered a stroke or are at high risk for a stroke after discharge from the hospital, according to the release. Hospital clinicians will determine kit recipients based on risk and financial need and educate patients on how to use the cuffs.

“Hypertension is sometimes called ‘The Silent Killer’ because it may go undetected until it causes a stroke, a heart attack, or kidney failure,” Leonardi said in the release. “Monitoring is the key to earlier diagnosis and better treatment, so the Hudsons’ incredibly generous gift will help at-risk patients to avoid these disasters.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of all Americans have hypertension, though only one in four have the disease under control.
