Encompass Health Corp., a health care provider with 145 hospitals nationwide, plans to build a 27-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Irmo.

Encompass offers both facility- and home-based patient care through its network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and home health and hospice agencies. It also has 249 home health and 95 hospice locations in 42 states and Puerto Rico.

The free-standing Irmo location will be at the corner of Evergreen Drive and Shady Lane and will be built with the capacity to expand to 50 beds, according to a news release from the company. Construction is slated to begin in the third quarter of 2022, with the hospital expected to begin providing inpatient rehabilitation services in the fourth quarter of 2023.

“We are excited to expand and grow our rehabilitation services in the Columbia, South Carolina area,” said Linda Wilder, president of Encompass Health's South Atlantic region. “Through the new inpatient rehabilitation hospital, we will provide our patients with coordinated and connected care that meets them where they are in their healthcare journeys and makes a positive difference in their lives.”

The hospital will serve patients recovering from illnesses and injuries including strokes and other neurological disorders, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions. The hospital will offer 24-hour nursing care as well as physical, occupational and speech therapies.

The facility’s patient rooms will all be private, and it will also feature a therapy gym, cafeteria, pharmacy and therapy courtyard.

Birmingham, Ala.-headquartered Encompass has eight inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in South Carolina, along with three home health locations and one hospice location.
