Lake Murray is set to host the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup for the third time since 2008. The fishing tournament features 53 of the top anglers from around the country. It’s scheduled for Aug. 11-13, and is expected to draw a number of people to the Columbia area.

Fishing League Worldwide is the world’s largest tournament fishing organization, and hosts the Forrest Wood Cup each year. This year’s winner is expected to earn more than $300,000.

In the two previous events on Lake Murray, held in 2008 and 2014, the event brought close to $72 million in economic impact to the Lake Murray area according to Miriam Atra president and CEO of the Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Bureau.

“We are so proud to once again welcome the Forrest Wood Cup to the ‘Jewel of South Carolina.’ The economic impact felt when we hosted this event in 2014 was award-winning,” Atra said in a news release. “The fans in South Carolina are extremely passionate about bass fishing, and we are excited to bring another world-class event that Lake Murray Country can enjoy.”

Anglers will take off from Dreher Island State Park located at 3677 State Park Road in Prosperity, at 7 each morning. Each day’s weigh-in will be held at the Colonial Life Arena located at 801 Lincoln St., in Columbia, beginning at 5 p.m.

“We couldn’t be happier to be bringing the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup to Lake Murray,” Kathy Fennel, Fishing League Worldwide president of operations said in a press release. “We’ve had great success hosting our FLW events in Columbia in the past, and the fan attendance and enthusiasm at our previous tournaments have made bringing the Cup back an obvious choice. We are proud to bring our championship event back to our fans in South Carolina.”

In addition to the weigh-ins, Fishing League Worldwide will hold its annual expo at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The expo will feature games, activities and giveaways from over 40 league sponsors and takes place from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
