For the second season, area high school football teams will face off between lines that traditionally mark a baseball field at Spirit Communications Park, home of the Columbia Fireflies.

Brookland-Cayce will take on Gray Collegiate tonight at 7 p.m. in the first of three high school games to be played at the park. Spring Valley and River Bluff will clash Oct. 13, while Ridge View and Westwood will go toe-to-toe Oct. 20.

“This facility is a multi-sport venue, and it’s gratifying to once again showcase first-class schools and talented student-athletes to their fans around the Midlands,” Fireflies president John Katz said in a release. “We’ll be providing them with the very best game-day experience.”

Brookland-Cayce is coming off a record 12-win season that included regional championship and an appearance in the Class 3A state semifinals. Gray Collegiate, coming off a 4-7 season, is no stranger to success at Spirit Communications, having defeated Eau Claire 49-3 at the venue last year.

The War Eagles are led by wide receiver Chylon Thomas, who caught 60 passes for 947 yards last season.

Spring Valley features four-star linebacker Channing Tindall, the top-ranked recruit in the state according to 247 Sports. The 6-foot-2, 213-pounder has offers from South Carolina, Georgia, Auburn and Florida State, among others. First-year River Bluff head coach Blair Hardin spent the last three seasons at North Myrtle Beach, leading the Chiefs to a school-record 12 wins and trip to the Class 4A semifinals last year.

Ridge View returns 13 starters from a 10-win team, included highly sought-after defensive tackle Damion Daley. The Blazers also won at Spirit Communications last season, beating Fairfield Central. Westwood’s 3-1 start to the 2017 season has surpassed its win total from last year.

Tickets are $7 and available on game days at the park. The majority of the proceeds will go to the host school.
