An Independence Day game and fireworks celebration drew the second-largest crowd in Spirit Communications Park history on Wednesday, with 9,278 fans watching the Columbia Fireflies fall 4-2 to the Greenville Drive.

Wednesday’s attendance total ranked second only to Aug. 21, 2017, when 9,629 fans packed the ballpark for a day game that included a total solar eclipse. The 3-year-old park has now drawn more than 9,000 fans on four occasions.

After the game, the Fireflies auctioned off specialty stars and stripes jerseys worn by the players, raising more than $8,000. Those proceeds will be donated to RIP Medical Debt, a program that assists military veterans with medical expenses.

Donations to RIP Medical Debt are being accepted through a text campaign that runs through Monday. To make a contribution, text Fireflies to 50155 and follow the instructions.
