Hip-hop trailblazers Salt-N-Pepa will headline this year’s Famously Hot New Year celebration in downtown Columbia.

The first female rap act to receive Grammy and to go platinum, Salt-N-Pepa is known for hits including Push It and Shoop. Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton will perform in front of the Statehouse on Dec. 31 before a countdown to midnight and a fireworks display.

Famously Hot New Year will include food vendors and cash bars with beer, wine and champagne at the intersection of Main and Gervais streets. The event, which has taken place since 2011, was headlined last year by En Vogue, who collaborated with Salt-N-Pepa on the hit Whatta Man.

“We are honored to host such impactful and influential talent at this year’s celebration,” Laura Valleni, Famously Hot New Year co-chair, said in a news release. “Famously Hot New Year is one of Columbia, South Carolina’s favorite traditions, serving as a time to celebrate our community with friends, neighbors, and visitors from near and far.”

Famously Hot New Year is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with sponsors including the city of Columbia, Richland County, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and Colonial Life.
