Southern cuisine restaurant Willie Sue’s Food and Spirits has closed its Columbia location at 380 Columbiana Drive.

General manager Javier Boscio told SC Biz News that the closing is a result of “unforeseen circumstances” related to issues with the building and lack of available staff. The eatery’s last day was Sept. 18.

Willie Sue’s served what owners described as “Southern cuisine with an upscale twist.” The restaurant had a wood-fire grill and a full bar with an extensive bourbon collection.

The original Willie Sue’s restaurant, located at Patriot Parkway in Sumter, serves the same menu and will remain open. That location opened more than 20 years ago and is named after owner Ricky McLeod’s grandmother, who was well-known for her cooking skills and cooked in Sumter-area boarding houses during the Great Depression, according to the restaurant’s website.
