Initial unemployment claims remain above 3,000 in S.C.

The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce paid out more than $72.7 million in a combination of state and federal unemployment benefits from March 21-March 27 and has paid out more than $5.7 billion since March 15, 2020.

For the week ending March 27, 3,105 initial unemployment claims were filed in South Carolina, an increase of 39 from the 3,066 filed the previous week, according to DEW data. Horry County saw a state-high 397 claims filed, while Greenville County had 297 and Richland County 269.

Spartanburg County saw 218 claims, Charleston County 197 and Lexington County 138.

Nationally, initial unemployment claims rose by 61,000 from the previous week to 719,000.
