Initial unemployment claims filed in S.C. for the week ending April 3 jumped to nearly 5,000, with a state-high 479 filed in Richland County.
The 4,969 claims represented an increase of 1,864 from the 3,105 filed the previous week, according to data from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.
Nationally, claims rose to 744,000, up 16,000 from the previous week.
Horry County saw 449 claims filed and Greenville County 438. Spartanburg County had 339 claims, Charleston County 305 and Lexington County 215.
The $70.7 million paid out in a combination of state and federal unemployment benefits for the week brought the total payout in South Carolina since March 15, 2020 to $5.78 billion.
