Initial S.C. unemployment claims for the week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4 dropped by 50 from the previous week, with a total of 1,265 first-time claims filed.
Greenville County saw a state-high 222 initial claims filed, followed by Richland County at 179, Horry County at 152, Charleston County at 138, Spartanburg County at 135 and Lexington County at 103.
The S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce paid out nearly $5 million in a combination of federal and state unemployment program benefits for the most recent week. Since March 15, 2020, more than $6.5 billion in benefits has been paid out, with 922,562 initial claims filed.
Nationally, initial unemployment claims fell to 310,000, a decrease of 35,000 from the previous week.
