Initial unemployment claims drop by 250 in week in S.C.

The number of initial unemployment claims filed in South Carolina for the week ending Oct. 16 dropped by 250 from the previous week.  

For the most recent week, the state saw 1,064 first-time claims, according to statistics from the S.C. Department of Workforce. The week before, there were 1,314 initial claims filed in the state.  

Greenville County saw 113 claims for the week ending Oct. 16, while Richland County had 79. Spartanburg County saw 58, Berkeley County 44 and Lexington County 43.  

No claim information was available from Horry County.  

Since March 15, 2020, there have been 931,223 initial unemployment claims filed in South Carolina, with DEW paying out nearly $6.6 billion in a combination of state and federal unemployment benefits.  

Nationally, initial claims fell by 6,000 from the previous week to 290,000.
