Unemployment rate remains steady in November

South Carolina’s unemployment rate remained at 3.3% for November, the same as October’s estimate, according to data released recently by the S.C. Department of Unemployment and Workforce. Nationally, the unemployment rate also remained unchanged at 3.7%, according to the Current Population Survey.

During November, the estimate of unemployed people in the state decreased to 78,153, a decrease of 406 people from October and a decrease of 7,014 from November 2021.

The seasonally adjusted monthly survey estimated the number of South Carolinians working decreased to 2,302,601, a decrease of 5,296 people from October but an increase of 16,652 from the November 2021 estimate.

The state’s estimated labor force, which includes people working plus those looking for work, decreased to 2,380,754, a decrease of 5,702 from October but still 9,638 more than November 2021.

During November, the state saw a decrease of 1,100 nonfarm payroll jobs, according to the DEW report, with gains in education and health services, financial activities, government, information and other services. There were declines in professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, construction, trade, transportation and utilities, and manufacturing.

The Columbia metropolitan statistical area saw no change in the number of jobs from October to November, while the Charleston/North Charleston area gained 1,700 and the Greenville/Anderson/Mauldin area saw a loss of 2,600 jobs, according to the report.
