For the sixth year in a row, the University of South Carolina has been listed as one of the top 100 patent-producing universities in the world.

The National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association has published the list, based on data from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, since 2013.

In 2017, USC was the lead on 37 issued U.S. patents, tying it for 70th, and was named on 42 total patents.

“The University of South Carolina is home to some of brightest and most prolific inventors in the world,” said Bill Kirkland, director of USC’s Office of Economic Engagement, in a news release. “Whether they are faculty or our students, researchers at USC are finding new ways to improve the quality of life in South Carolina and beyond.”

The Office of Economic Engagement manages the university’s patents and offers patented technology for licensing.

The University of California topped the list with 524 patents, followed by MIT with 306.
